This is an initial stage of treatment for periodontal disease. This non-surgical procedure allows for the removal of calculus and plaque that attaches to the tooth surfaces. The process especially targets the area below the gum line, along the root. The goal is to remove unwanted deposits, microorganisms and toxins. This procedure may be performed under local anaesthetic.
When deep pockets between teeth and gums are present, regular home care and maintenance may not be sufficient to remove the plaque and tartar effectively. Consequently, surgery may be needed to restore periodontal health.
Benefits of Treatment
Scaling and root planing may have many periodontal benefits including:
improving the periodontium and preventing systemic disease including heart and respiratory diseases
protecting teeth against tooth loss. Gum disease can destroy gingival bone and tissue leading to tooth loss
can make the mouth more aesthetically pleasing, and should reduce bad breath caused from food particles and bacteria in the oral cavity
removes a superficial stain
Everyone should experience the benefits of great gums. But with gum disease affecting 7 out of 10 Canadians, not many of us do.
